DIY Fairy Garden House from a Birdhouse

DIY Fairy Garden House. Create a beautiful fairy garden house with supplies you find at your local craft store – like an unfinished birdhouse and stones.

My daughter is obsessed with fairy gardens. Every time we go camping, she creates a new little fairy village out of things she finds in the woods.

How to Make a Fairy House

I thought creating a little fairy garden at home would be fun. Today, I will show you how to make your own fairy house from an unfinished birdhouse.

Supplies:

Prepare Birdhouse

First, I started with an unfinished wooden bird house I found at Michaels. Most craft stores have a good selection of these and are not too expensive. I even found one that looked like a little log cabin!

Unfinished bird house

Since this was supposed to be a house for fairies and not birds, I used my Dremel Micro tool to cut off the little perch on the front of the birdhouse.

I used sandpaper to smooth it a bit. I didn’t worry about making it completely flush with the front of the house since I would be covering it with stones.

Paint House

Next, I painted the entire house using acrylic craft paints. I used a light, airy green for the roof and a dark brown for the house’s base.

Paint the birdhouse

My daughter wanted to choose the colors for the door, so I let her pick, and she helped me paint the wooden embellishment.

Create Fairy Door

I glued a small fairy wreath I found around the painted floral wood piece, and this made our door. I glued it to the birdhouse on the back.

You could add a door knob by using a small bead or charm.

Note: The little opening for the birdhouse is now in the back. I am still deciding whether to cover it or leave it open. I may add something to cover it so we don’t get a fairy house filled with spiders!

Glue Small Stones

The next step is to glue small rocks I purchased from Dollar Tree around the house. There was no rhyme or reason to where the stones were placed. My main goal was to have as few gaps as possible between stones.

Helpful Tip: I would normally use a hot glue gun for most projects like this. But since this little house will sit outside in the elements and be near plants that need to be watered, I wanted to use a stronger waterproof glue. I chose Aleene’s Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive. It is fast-drying and waterproof and works on a variety of surfaces.

The house turned out so cute! It is the perfect little hideaway for all the fairies in our garden.

How to Create an Outdoor Fairy Garden

To create the fairy garden, I started with a large pot I had on hand at the house. I have also seen some cute ideas of creating a fairy garden inside an old wheelbarrow or whiskey barrel planter.

I added some soil to the bottom and then placed a smaller plastic pot upside down inside the larger one. This made the pot lighter and allowed me to use less dirt to fill it.

I filled the pot with garden soil and added some pretty fall flowers, which I found at Home Depot, towards the back side of the pot around the edges. I tried to find small plants but made do with what I could find.

After I placed the house in the center of the pot, I added a pebble path out the front door. The blue stone “river” was added to the side of the house. To finish it off, I added some succulents around the front.

I didn’t want to fill every square inch of the pot, as I knew my plants would grow, and I also wanted to leave some room for my daughter to add some of her creations to our garden.

Adding fairy accessories and tiny furniture around your house can make it extra special. The dollar store has a great selection in the summer. Some ideas are little people or fairies, mushrooms, gnomes, bird baths, benches, and steps.

You can also add natural materials from your own backyard, such as pine cones, sticks, leaves, and live moss.

Adding battery power fairy lights around the house would make a nice addition. I chose not to since I needed to water the plants, but if you are careful, I think it could work.
