Prince George has an adventure ahead in September as he enrolls in a new school, Eton College.

Kensington Palace announced on June 16 that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 12-year-old son will be heading to Eton College in the fall, ending months of speculation about where George would enroll after aging out of the Lambrook School.

“Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from this September,” a spokesperson told PEOPLE.

The Prince and Princess of Wales explored a variety of options for the next stage of their eldest son’s schooling, but a source told The Mail on Sunday last summer that “all roads lead to Eton.”

The couple was spotted with George at Eton in June 2023, visiting before his 10th birthday. It’s a necessary step for incoming students to register before June 30 of the school year when the boy turns 10, so the timing would have aligned to get George signed up.

Eton is a world-renowned all-boys’ boarding school in Windsor, serving students between the ages of 13 and 18.

It was founded by King Henry VI in 1440 as a school for poor boys to be housed and educated for free and has since grown into a prestigious institution that has taught 20 British prime ministers, authors, actors and royalty from around the world, including several members of Prince George’s own family.

Prince William and Prince Harry both went to Eton, making them both “Old Etonians” as alumni. Princess Diana’s father, John Spencer, and brother, Charles Spencer, are also both Eton men, connecting George to his late grandmother’s side of the family.

Queen Elizabeth’s first cousins the Duke of Kent, the Duke of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent also attended Eton, and Prince Michael’s son Lord Frederick Windsor’s time there overlapped with Prince William’s.

More recently, Princess Margaret’s children, Lady Sarah Chatto and David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon, enrolled their sons, Samuel and Arthur, there too, continuing what’s become a British royal family tradition.

About 1,350 young men attend Eton, and students reside in 25 different boarding houses, with no more than 55 boys in each. There are no day or weekly students at the exclusive boarding school, where every pupil is assigned his own room to develop self-discipline and responsibility.

Eton’s distinct uniform consists of a black tailcoat with waistcoat and pinstriped trousers, and academics are balanced with extracurriculars, sports and career education.

Today, Eton emphasizes “offering opportunities to boys from all backgrounds,” and parents are no longer allowed to put their son’s name down at birth, according to the school’s website. Since 2002, hopeful students have had to score their spot through interviews, tests and references. School fees were about $80,000 for the 2025-2026 year.

While a whole new world awaits Prince George at Eton, he won’t be far from home, as the school is about a 15-minute drive from his family’s main base, Forest Lodge.

Prince William dropped a major clue in a May interview that George was preparing for the next step by “boarding last night” at Lambrook, increasing intrigue that he would officially start at boarding school soon.

George follows William in the direct line of succession to the throne, meaning that Eton has again been selected to educate a future king.
